A group of 30 students from the STEM club (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) and year 8 from Holy Cross Catholic High School, Chorley-had an exciting day at the Lancashire Science Festival at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston on Thursday 25 June 2015. They were able to sample a mixture of lectures and interactive scientific activities throughout the day based on the science ‘EVOLVES’ theme. They started off a fun packed day in an ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ based lecture on ADVENTURE SCIENCE by Huw Edwards. Here he looked at some of the science behind adventure science such as the types of clothing needed and equipment used to filter dirty water instantly to clean potable water. Students were even given the opportunity to sample some ‘survival’ food as they tried meal worms, crickets and locusts-treats suitable for the most discerning survivalist. The students then went on to be coders adding a new ‘poo’ application to the popular MINECRAFT game in a challenging computing session. From this, the students went on to sample various interactive activities on the SCIENCE SHOWFLOOR such as virtual Minecraft, 3D noughts and crosses, sampling an archaeological dig by estimating the brain capacity of humans throughout evolution and undergoing a hair raising experience at the Van Der Graff Generator to name but a few. They also had the invaluable experience of being able to chat to a diverse selection of representatives from local industry and the university. Next-the students went off to see a show called ‘Half Baked Heroes’ by Jon Wood-where they explored the science lurking in our kitchen cupboards.  This engaging show used various demonstrations and activities to explore the chemistry, physics and biology in our foods.  Finally-they rounded off a fantastic day by stepping back in time to see a baby triceratops dinosaur emerge from it’s lair and walk among the crowds-much to their delight. ‘The students had a great day-they had a lot of fun-from eating locusts to working out brain capacity-this was a fantastic learning experience-not to have been missed’ said Dr Knight who organised the trip. Science ‘EVOLVED’.
