European Day of Languages 2019

8 October 2019

What a fantastic week! As per previous years, the MFL dept led activities to celebrate the annual European Day of Languages.

Visit to UCLAN, Preston

A group of enthusiastic Y9 pupils visited a foreign language event at UCLAN, Preston. We heard a talk from a professor there who detailed to us the importance of having foreign language skills and how these can give us a competitive edge in business and the job market. We heard from three current UCLAN language students, who had just returned from their ‘year abroad’ in Korea, Germany and France, who gave our pupils a real life insight into how a languages path might unfold. Following a browse around the language challenge stalls, we were treated to a tour of the university. Our pupils were in awe of the facilities offered and were particularly interested in the interpreting booths.

After lunch we were involved in taster sessions in Greek, Spanish and Korean. Prizes were awarded at the end of the day to Ben, Ruby and Dauwd for full participation and engagement.

The Great Holy Cross Bake Off

Pupils were invited to bake and decorate cakes with languages and cultural themes and yet again the pupils were inspired in their contributions, making it the biggest event yet!

Mr Mcfarlane judged the entries and awarded:

First Prize – Sam Y8 (Cupcake language challenge)
Second Prize – Evie Y7 (All things Scottish)
Third Prize – Annabelle Y7 (Unity in Languages)

Highly Commended:
Ruby-Jean – Y8
Jessica – Y8
Niamh – Y7
Jennifer – Y7
Christopher – Y7

MFL staff then sold the cakes to pupils at break and lunchtime. Demand was high and the pupils raised almost £200 to add to the proceeds of the Macmillan Coffee Morning event. Well done and thank you to all who took part.

Association of Language Learning (ALL) National Writing Competition

For the third year running we have sent approximately 500 competition entries to the ALL National Foreign Language Writing Competition. Results have yet to be published but we are hoping for a hatrick following our successes over the last two years.
