Christmas Shoe Boxes

19 December 2019

Generous Holy Cross pupils have been collecting and filling shoe boxes which will be given to those in need over Christmas.

Organised by the school’s SVP (St Vincent de Paul) group, the boxes themselves have been donated by Dorothy Perkins and Elsie’s on Chorley Market.

The pupils have covered them and filled them full of toiletries, underwear and non-perishable items with some donated by Tesco Chorley.

All the boxes have been labelled for the different age groups and they will go to young and old.

The school has been doing this for more than 20 years, with former Learning Support teacher and SVP Co-ordinator Mrs Price in charge over the last 16 years.

“We will send them to International Aid and they will go to the Ukraine, Romania and Sierra Leone, areas that have suffered in recent months,” said Mrs Price.

Year Nine student Bayleigh said: “I am in Year Nine now and have been part of the SVP Group since Year Seven. We do things like organise the shoe box appeal every year and also hold raffles as well as organise our senior citizens parties. I enjoy it.”

Tesco’s Community Co-ordinator Helen Tune came into school to see the progress made with the shoe boxes and also give Denise money towards the SVP Christmas Senior Citizens Party.

“As a company, we are always keen to help,” said Helen. “We have donated to schools for many years and it’s an important part of our community initiatives.”
