It will be all sequins and quick-step at Holy Cross as they launch their own version of Strictly Come Dancing.

The school is trying to raise money for a new minibus and so the School Council came up with the idea of putting their best foot forward as a fundraiser.

There will be 14 couples – one teacher and one Year 11 student – who will have to learn three dances of the Charleston, the Waltz and the Cha Cha Cha before mid-March.

And they are practising hard under the watchful eye of RE teacher, Ms Devlin, who was a dancer as a youngster, and Ms Cowley who runs the Routledge Centre.

“Alex and Alison are both fantastic dance teachers,” said teacher, Ms Clare, who has organised the event and will be taking part.

“The final is on March 26th at the school and the couples will perform the Waltz and the Cha Cha Cha and then there will be a top four showdance which means no rules!

“We didn’t think we would have enough teachers but they are really keen and some people are taking it very seriously.

“I think a lot of the student dancers are taking charge as I don’t know my left and right well enough so my partner, Harvey, has to squeeze my hand or my shoulder to tell me which foot to move!

“Our Olympian steeplechaser, Mr Stokes, is super competitive and thinks his hips have a mind of their own so he will want to win!

“We have had a large number of dancers at the school who help us on a Friday after school, during rehearsals. They go round and help people who are struggling – which is needed!”

Head teacher, Mr Gaughan, has decided to step away from the dancing and take the role of a judge.

“It’s a superb idea and I am amazed how keen everyone is,” said Mr Gaughan. “With my two left feet, I thought judging was the best job for me!

“Hopefully it will raise a large amount of money for a minibus and everyone will have fun as well.”

Teacher, Dr Knight, who runs the school’s Student Council and Ms Clare will be selling tickets soon, priced at £5, for Strictly…Holy Cross style.
