Holy Cross swimmer, Mariette, has qualified for the National Swimming Championships in August despite being one of the youngest in her age group.

The Year Nine student’s birthday is December 28th and, with the age categories based on the calendar year, the 14-year-old is in the 15-year-old category.

But her best time in the 100m breast-stroke of one minute 19.42 seconds set at the end of May in Manchester, qualified her for the national event at the prestigious  Ponds Forge in Sheffield where she will be among the country’s top swimmers.

“My mum looked on the internet for the final list and there were 24 named – and I was the 24th,” said Mariette. “I have just scraped in but I am so happy, especially as I am one of the youngest. I will go there and just do my best.”

Mariette used to swim for Chorley Marlins until a year ago when she joined Bolton Metro under the watchful eye of coach Emma Swanwick.

“Emma has worked on my technique constantly in the last year and thankfully it has all come together. I get up at 4.20am four mornings a week but it is worth it when you make an event like this.

“The fastest person there in my age group is around two seconds faster than me and hopefully swimming with the top swimmers will help me to get a personal best. All I can do is try my best.”

As well as swimming, Mariette runs with Holy Cross PE teacher and 2012 Olympic steeplechase competitor Stuart Stokes after school.

“It’s all about keeping fit and healthy. I am better at swimming than running and it is exciting as there is a live feed from Sheffield on the day so my friends will be able to watch me.”|
