Ella is number one in the UK at taekwondo after winning the British International Championships at -44kg in London.

The Holy Cross student has gone from strength to strength since she took up the sport five years ago.

The black belt began at Ellison’s Taekwondo Club in Chorley but has since moved to Liverpool Academy which is part of the GB Talent squad.

“It’s like a Centre of Excellence for football and I have been training there for six months,” said Ella, 13.

“Winning the British International title is my biggest achievement so far. I had three rounds and I beat a Norwegian girl in the first round, then a fellow British girl before overcoming a Dutch girl in the final.

“I got a medal and it means, when I go for Great Britain trials, my name will already be out there.”

Ella trains five times a week for around 10 hours in taekwondo and still finds time to play football for Euxton Ladies as their striker.

“It’s about getting the balance right. I set aside a specific time to do my homework and every Tuesday I have a rest day.”

The GB trials are in December in Manchester but first she has the Nottingham Open which is a ranking event.

“That’s important. Winning the British International Championship moved me up to first in the UK at under 44 kg category and it was pretty spectacular. Now I just want to keep improving and my aim is the Olympics.”
